Liverpool’s goalkeeping issues are real, but immediate transfer help is not the answer

The 7-2 humbling at Aston Villa will naturally have sparked concern among Liverpool fans about their side’s defensive frailties and what that could mean for the 2020/21 campaign, one in which Jürgen Klopp’s men are hoping to defend their Premier League crown.

The area of greatest concern will be over the goalkeeper situation, with Alisson Becker set to miss the next few weeks after suffering a shoulder injury. The Brazilian is undoubtedly one of football’s elite stoppers, but his injury record is becoming something of a concern, particularly as the position tends to be one that attracts fewer fitness issues than any other.

Last season, the former Roma goalkeeper missed a significant number of matches through injury – he sat out nine league games, did not feature in either the FA Cup nor Carabao Cup, and missed a further three fixtures in the Champions League.
