Afcon final prediction
The starting 24 nations have now been whittled down to two as the culmination of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations reaches its peak. Algeria and Senegal face off to conclude the competition that really hasn’t been that fun to watch. The standards have been arguably low as compared to previous AFCON tournaments (a story for another day) but hey, this final could be an epic battle.
The two sides had to overcome tough semi-finals against Tunisia and Nigeria. Senegal crept past Tunisia with an extra-time 1-0 margin after both sides had already missed a penalty. On the flip side Algeria needed an injury-time free kick from Mahrez to secure their passage to Friday’s showpiece.
Both sides are clear of injury heading into the final but Senegal will have to cope without defensive colossus Kalidou Koulibaly, who is suspended. FC Schalke’s Salif Sane is likely to step in to fill the void.
El Khadra (Algeria) has been arguably the best team at AFCON so far, having outscored every other team with 12 goals, 4 ahead of Senegal and Nigeria. This is going to be a close contest, as the Mane-led side has got its own recognizable talents in the form of Ismaila Sarr and Keita Balde. The Lions of Teranga (Senegal) have already fallen to Algeria once in Cairo: their 1-0 group stage defeat. Senegal has won every game since then, though, scoring six without reply.
Algeria 2-1 Senegal
Like I mentioned, this showpiece has got all the ingredients to make it epic, but I see Algeria edging over Senegal.
